Diamond Jig Lures
Diamond jig fishing lures are one of the most versatile fishing lures ever made. They are great to use off the surf or from a boat. These are a staple on every charter and party boat in the Northeast and almost every surfcaster's plug bag. Why? Because they are very durable fish catching lures that aren't expensive. They are especially good when slender bait like sandeels or spearing are present. They cast great and can be fished a variety of ways. Cast it, Jig it, Troll it... They catch! Diamond jig lures are very popular for targeting species like cod, bluefish, striped bass, sea bass, tuna, mackerel, fluke, weakfish, false albacore, and bonito, among many others.
What is a diamond jig fishing lure? A diamond jig (sometimes called an AVA Jig) is a slender four sided lure which has a wide point in the middle and is tapered towards the ends. They are made of lead and have a shinny chrome plated finish that is very durable. The top and bottom of the weighed lure body has an eye. One eye is used to tie your leader line onto and the other eye has a swivel mounted onto which a hook is attached to. Some are rigged with a bare treble hook, or with a bare long shank O'Shaughnessy "J" hook. These O'Shaughnessy hooks are sometimes dressed with a Red Gill, Large Grub or Shad bodies for extra action and attraction. However the most popular style are diamond jigs which are rigged with a colored latex tubing (cut on a sharp angle) which is on a long bent shank hook known as a limerick hook.
The AVA brand name still lives from the days of AVA Tackle, which introduced the lure many years ago.
